The Malouf Z ActiveDough pillow is constructed of a specialty memory foam (ActiveDough™ foam) that has the pressure relief of a memory foam pillow but the quick response and support of a latex pillow. The Z ActiveDough pillow comes in several different options: Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint, Bamboo Charcoal, and Cooling Gel. Each of these pillows has a different scent to help promote sleep or provide cooling. Additionally, they all come with a breathable Tencel® mesh cover. The Malouf Z ActiveDough pillow is also zoned to promote airflow and provide different support levels for the neck and head. This pillow is great for side, back, and stomach sleepers because of its unique ActiveDough™ foam. On initial testing, this pillow has a great feel and we like how it has a memory foam feel but quickly responds to movement. The addition of scents makes this pillow very unique and gives options to sleepers.

Initial Thoughts / Unboxing

Upon unboxing, the pillow was in a standard plastic pillow bag. The Malouf ActiveDough pillow had minimal scent other than the prescribed scent (mint, lavender, chamomile).

Detailed Analysis

The Malouf ActiveDough pillow is available in queen, king, and travel sizes. It has a very unique feel. The pillow is able to achieve the quick-response and support of a latex pillow, while also having the perfect amount of sink and contouring like a memory foam pillow. The pillow core is designed with zoned technology so it has larger holes in the center and smaller holes around the perimeter to support the head and neck slightly differently. The Malouf ActiveDough pillow comes in several different options: Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint, Bamboo Charcoal, and Cooling Gel. Each of these pillows has a different scent to help promote sleep or provide cooling. Unlike most memory foam-like pillows, the Malouf ActiveDough pillow doesn’t absorb as much heat so your head stays cooler. Lastly, the fabric cover is made of durable Tencel which is silky soft and breathable.

Support ( A – Stomach; A – Back; A – Side )

Having one standard height usually makes it difficult to be great for all sleepers, but we found that because of the unique support and foam attributes that this pillow has makes it great for all sleepers: back, side, and stomach sleepers. The pillow is approximately 6″ in height which is a medium loft. Based on our firmness scale (view our firmness scale), the Malouf ActiveDough pillow is a 5. This means the pillow has a medium firmness which makes it suitable for many sleepers. Additionally, the unique foam that the core is made of gives it great support similar to a latex pillow.

Durability ( A )

We found no issues with the durability of the cover or pillow core through our testing. Tencel is known to be durable and showed it in our testing. Stitching remained intact, the zipper worked properly, and the inner core didn’t have any depressions/sagging.

Comfort ( A )

The quick response and support plus the cushion and contouring relief of the core, make this a very comfortable pillow. You get the best of both worlds with regards to memory foam and latex foam.

Excellent quality as Malouf is known for. Additionally, the technology that is involved in this unique foam core makes it worth every penny.

Subjective Thoughts

The feel of this pillow is very unique and outstanding. As exactly described, this pillow has the feel of both latex and memory foam. Additionally, the options are great for you to be able to pick a pillow the fits your sleep style. This is, so far, one of our favorite overall pillows.
